Our Only Obstacle

Yesterday we talked about unhappiness and briefly discussed how our thoughts and feelings create that unhappiness. Today let’s take a look at the single obstacle that underlies everything.

So just what is our only obstacle?

It’s simply our beliefs.

Yes, our beliefs.

First we’ll explore those beliefs and then we’ll discuss our thinking supports those beliefs, how those beliefs were created and how our feelings act as magnets that attract our circumstances which then influences our thoughts and beliefs once again. It becomes a never-ending cycle that looks like this:

  • The thoughts we think choose our direction and influence how we behave
  • Those behaviors then create our experiences
  • Our experiences create feelings
  • Feelings attract circumstances
  • The circumstances then form beliefs
  • Once formed, those beliefs motivate language and behavior
  • And once again, our thoughts are influenced by that language and behavior pattern

So what is a belief? The definition of belief is “something accepted as real or true.” But does this mean that all beliefs are true then? Absolutely not! Let’s further define the word this way – “a belief is something we decide is true.” However, it may not be true at all.

Let’s say you believe life is difficult and I believe it’s happy and fun. Someone else might believe it’s good in certain situations. Which outlook is true? Are they all true? Or are none of them true? The answer is, it depends entirely on your viewpoint. A belief is something we decide should be true based upon our life experiences and perceptions. What’s true for me might not be true for you and vice versa.

A belief is a belief, nothing else. It’s our own opinion of how we think things should be. Whatever our belief may be, it has total control over our lives. Our current situations are a direct result of what we believed in the past. In other words, what we thought about in the past is manifest today.

Sometimes trying to change a belief can be like hitting a brick wall but when you learn how to approach it and what originally created the belief, it can be easy. The brick wall doesn’t come down by continually hitting banging your head against it, as you have probably already discovered. The part you likely have not figured out is how to stop. And the reason you have yet to understand how to stop is because you have to be able to see the wall before you can stop hitting it.

You’ve probably heard the expression that seeing is believing. However, what you need to realize is that believing is not seeing truth. They’re actually quite the opposite. Our belief about how something should be is nothing more than a partially formed guess.

The first step to changing a belief is knowing you can’t rely on it if you expect to see truth or reality. You can only rely on direct experience or actual perception.

You do not have to seek the insight of another in order to change a belief, to see reality. Truth comes from direct experience as in to see is to know. Life is about here and now. Happiness is about here and now. Happiness is about seeing life the way it is and not the way we wish it were. In other words, happiness comes from seeing truth.

When we attempt to avoid seeing our experiences for what they are in order to avoid pain, we end up causing pain anyway. That’s what’s causing the pain to begin with.

For example, suppose you had a previously painful relationship and now you’re ready for a new relationship but you don’t want to get hurt again. You decide to proceed with caution, with your heart closed to protect yourself and will only open you’re heart once you’re sure this person is the right one.

The problem of approaching a new relationship with a closed heart is that by doing so you’re avoiding reality. With a closed heart, you cannot see the truth. You want to overlook the truth in order to avoid the pain not understanding that what you’re actually doing is attracting more pain.

In our desperate attempt to avoid pain and hurt, we will likely make the same mistakes over and over. And this cycle will continue until we simply learn to let go of the fears and approach things with an open heart.

So, the question is, how do we create our beliefs? One way is through repetition. Things can become beliefs if we see, hear, think about or experience them often enough. A child, for example, who continually sees his or her parents fighting all the time may grow up to believe that all relationships function in this way. Because of the pattern, the child may repeat the pattern in relationships once he or she reaches adulthood.

The same is true for those who grew up poverty or close to it. Or a child who repeatedly hears negative comments such as “You’ll never amount to anything.” This sort of upbringing may cause the child to develop low self-esteem and feel unworthy about having money.

The opposite could also happen. Suppose a child grows up in a wealthy family and sees what money can do when used correctly. The child decides somewhere along the line that having money is bad and ends up struggling financially as an adult.

Perhaps a parent often yells at their child and as a result, the child holds all the anger in. Over time, he believes he can’t express himself or that when he does express himself it must be with much anger and force.

We grow up waiting for anyone and everyone to give us input on how we should or should not live our lives. It’s as though we have an invisible computer keyboard strapped to us facing outward allowing others to enter whatever they want. Somewhere along the way, we develop a belief that says we’re not good enough. We believe there must be something with us.

Our parents and other relatives unknowingly taught us certain behaviors. But you know what? There’s no one to blame. Our parents did the best they could with what they had at the time. We adopted certain beliefs and behaviors because we thought we needed them to survive.

We have been taught to believe that we must be this way. The key word here, is taught. Why do you suppose we had to be taught? It’s because it’s not true! Take a moment to observe your life with an unconditioned mind and you’ll not only see it’s not true, you’ll also see how ridiculous it is.

In addition, we compare ourselves to those around us and create self-judgment. We look at who we think we are compared to everyone else. We’re always clinging to what should have been or what we should have done or should not have done or the way we think things should have turned out.

We rely on our self-judgment system to give us satisfaction. But if we look at it for what it is, we see it only gives us a temporary feeling of being satisfied. In truth, this judgment system is our primary basis of fear and anxiety, always placing doubts in our minds.

As soon as we look at truth, doubt rises with it. Why? Because doubt is the flip side of belief. The very moment we hold some false idea about ourselves, we inevitably give rise to fear. The two are inseparable. We create our own suffering by repeating confusion. We must learn to rely on direct perception instead. Living this way is like driving with a flat tire, it moves along but the ride is rough and slow. We think something might be wrong but we’re not sure what’s causing the bumping. We feel there’s something out there we must get or something we must keep away from in order to be happy. This self-supporting system of outdated beliefs and false perceptions keeps them alive and well and thus the bumping continues.

The trap is in wanting and craving for something outside us. We must see what doesn’t make sense when things aren’t working in order to see the truth. The confusion and head-banging comes from our illusionary beliefs that we are separate from what’s going on. We believe it’s someone or something out there doing it to us.

Emotional Impact and it’s Power

Now, let’s talk about how our beliefs have impact on our emotions.

To illustrate this, lets say that as a child, you loved to pick flowers for your mother. One day, as you picked flowers from the neighbors yard unaware that what you were doing was wrong, the neighbor, a big, tall man, confronted you and said some things such as “You little brat! Wait till I get my hands on you! You’re going to be in serious trouble!”

With this kind of emotional impact at a young age, you could grow to believe that tall people are mean or that you can’t trust tall people. As an adult, this might show up as being a person who just can’t seem to get along with tall men and you have no idea why.

Another example might be in relationships. Perhaps you grew up in a broken home and thus were repeatedly exposed to the idea that relationships are hard to keep together and most end in divorce. Maybe we believe divorce is what happens to all relationships.

Because of our false beliefs, we can no longer see reality, see truth. We’re too blinded by our perceptions to what we believe to be the truth. Stop, sit back, relax and think about your own beliefs for a moment.

What do you believe about relationships? How’s it working for you? What about money? Have you grown up hearing such things as “Money doesn’t grow on trees. There’s not enough money to go round. You can’t be spiritual and have money.” So what do you believe about money and wealth? How are those beliefs working for you?

I encourage to examine your beliefs about money, relationships, spirituality, career, family, health and how they’re working for you. Figure out where it came from and who says it’s true.

Remember that a belief is what YOU decide is true and yet, it may not be true at all.


Unhappiness

Happiness only exists when we see that unhappiness is not connected to the event itself but rather to how we perceive the event.

There are only five basic reasons for unhappiness:

Not getting what we want in our life

Getting what we want and not being satisfied with it

The absence of something or someone we love

Enduring something or someone we really don’t want in our lives

And the biggest concern – living in the past or the future, not in the Now

The pain and unhappiness we experience are caused by our unwillingness to accept what is here right now and let go of everything else. We must let go of the past as well as our expectations of the future. It’s only when the pain becomes unbearable that we finally discover our willingness to let go.

We’ve become attached to the pain. Most of us choose the old way because we’re good at it. It’s what we know, so we retreat to the familiar. It’s who we believe we are and it feels safe and comfortable. We hang on to our old methods because there is no risk. And the only reason we have unhappiness is because we hold on to what we think happiness should be. How we respond leads us either towards the happiness we seek or further away.

So let’s begin by discovering our thoughts, our beliefs and behaviors. Let’s explore our feelings and our thoughts. Observing these areas will allow us to see ourselves a little more clearly and we’ll begin to see how we approach life, how we think, how powerful our words are and why we embrace certain behaviors. As we learn about these things, we’ll discover how they influence our values and how our feelings and beliefs affect our lives.

Whether you’re right or wrong shouldn’t concern you at this point. Just keep an open mind, explore the process and see how it all unfolds. Focus on yourself. The point isn’t what you think, feel, believe, speak or how you behave – the point is to find out why.

For example, you might hold the belief that life is difficult. It’s a simple statement that’s heard often. But here’s what I want you to do – observe yourself and explore how you came to believe that life is difficult. Who taught you to believe this? What events support that belief? More importantly, how has having this belief affected your life? Does it add to your happiness? Ease your pain? Or does it just cause you to suffer more?

What would happen if you challenged that belief? Would your life be different? How? My purpose here is to get you to ask yourself why you have these beliefs and then for you to ask yourself what if they aren’t true? Ask yourself “Is this belief really necessary?”

My aim isn’t to motivate you. We have had enough motivation to last us a lifetime. It’s an addiction. What we really need is correction. We need to discover what de-motivates us, what un-motivates us. We must discover what turns us off. Getting turned on is easy. We can do that in the blink of an eye. What we need is to learn how to get turned on and the stay that way. The key to happiness is finding out what turns us off.

We will find happiness only when we discover what’s holding us back.

Consistency

The topic of consistency seems to be a hot theme lately so I’ve chosen to write about it here today.

While there are many different facets of consistency, I’m going to talk about being consistent as it relates to personal conduct.

Now I’m not one to be easily offended or to take things personally but I do notice when a person isn’t consistent in what they say and do. When their actions and their words don’t match. Or when their words one minute contradict with their words the next minute. I find this a bit frustrating.

Usually I can pass these things off as being unimportant but sometimes there are those moments when inconsistency just can’t be ignored and must be called to attention. Not called to attention to hurt anothers feelings or ridicule them or anything like that – but simply to enable one to truly understand what’s happening and why.

Is the inconsistency because the person hasn’t thought the idea all the way through? Is it perhaps because there’s more than meets the eye? Or something hidden beneath the surface that isn’t obvious? Is it because different factors come into play depending on the situation? Is it because the person truly doesn’t know what they want or what’s expected of them? Or maybe they’re trying to say what they think is right to save face?

I’m sure there’s any number of reasons but when the inconsistent actions or words of another affect me personally somehow, I feel led to get to the bottom of the situation and find out what’s up. What caused it? Can it really be ignored or does it really affect me?

These are things we need to be conscious of especially as parents, especially as a spouse. When you’re married and/or when you have children, you must be mindful of your thoughts, your words and actions. You must ensure that they match. Discipline must always be consistent – even between two parents.

In other words, if I discipline the children in one particular way for a certain offense, my husband must also do the same. Children are the ones most often affected by inconsistency. If they can’t understand the rules, how can we expect them to behave appropriately? If things are not consistent, how can we expect them to understand the rules, to understand the boundaries?

And when they don’t, when they behave inappropriately, when they don’t mind the boundaries, who’s problem is it?

I’d have to say it’s mine. As a parent, it’s my job to teach them and if I fail to teach them, then I have not done my job. We cannot blame another for our own mistakes.


Intention – From Thinking to Knowing

I can remember the first time I experienced a knowing. I remember it just as it were yesterday though it was about 20 years ago and I’ll attempt to explain it to you here. I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Something I rarely did at the age of 14. But on this night, the night before the first day of high school, I woke up to use the bathroom. As I stepped out of my bedroom, I saw my cat lying on the floor of the kitchen between my bedroom and the bathroom. Nothing unusual as she often laid there, just outside my bedroom door, as if to protect me. She’d been my cat since I was 5 years old.

She was born in the barn on my grandparents farm and the vet didn’t expect her live more than a year or two. She had an enlarged heart, was missing part of one of her back legs and she had asthma. Not a great start in life. And I was visiting my grandparents that summer. I remember my grandma carrying the kitten around in her housecoat pocket. I was so happy when my grandma said I could have the kitten. My grandma and I were the only 2 humans she liked.

So as I came out of my bedroom that night and made my way towards the bathroom, I suddenly had an eerie feeling. The hairs on the back of my neck pricked up and I stopped, unable to move. I noticed the cat on the floor, stretched out on her side. And I began to feel a peace come over me. All at once, I knew the cat had died. I reached down to touch her but I knew her Spirit wasn’t there in her body. Yet I could still feel her presence there, lingering for just a moment, as if to say goodbye.

It became clear to me at that moment with a knowing that we were somehow connected in Spirit, connecting by the Source, the Creator. The pain of her death never filled my thoughts. Somehow I knew that her departure from this physical world was not a departure from my life and I can still feel her presence at times, just outside my doorway, as if to protect me.
